To start this day-tripping adventure review, this comment should be addressed first. The people at Grand River Dinner Cruises were professional, friendly and treated their customers like family.
Our adventure started with a phone call to make an early-day cruise reservation at Grand River Dinner Boat Cruise outside of Caledonia. Did you know that studies suggest that, it takes only seconds for you to make a lasting first impression? “Good or bad,” that phone call took less than five seconds for us to realize this was going to be a great day. And, in the end, it was.
The second impression came as we drove into their parking lot. The grounds were kept in pristine condition. Picnic tables and benches were set up in perfect order. And looking down from the main building to the water, you could see the three docked pontoon boats that boast a capacity of up to 80 passengers per-boat.
When entering the foyer to confirm our reservation, we were once again greeted by a friendly voice behind the counter. It wasn’t the usual “next customer, please” attitude. Instead, we were treated like family, or at the very least, like valued customers whose business was genuinely appreciated.
Up until this point in my story, we’ve been treated OK on many of our DayTrippen adventures; however, this level of friendliness is something I haven’t experienced in years. Even the gift shop was refreshing with reasonably priced souvenirs instead of the outrageous prices you often see at tourist attractions.
I found myself thinking, “This can’t be right. Businesses aren’t usually this friendly and professional anymore.”
Now keep in mind, we had only booked a relaxing boat tour on the Grand River, but even before stepping aboard, you could tell this company took pride in what they did.
*** But folks, it didn’t stop there. ***
We were personally escorted on board the River Queen and onto our table. And then the next traveler escorted to their seat, and then the next.
As someone who doesn’t usually eat a large lunch, I found the portion to be just right. The meal served aboard the Grand River Dinner Cruise was excellent, easily worthy of five stars. Throughout the cruise, the captain explained where we were, pointed out landmarks, and shared interesting stories about the history of the Grand River and its surrounding.
WARNING: However, I should warn you, “If you’re looking for rock band excitement,” this probably isn’t your kind of Daytrippen adventure.
Cruising along the Grand River in a pontoon boat at a leisurely pace is all about slowing down. Trees line one bank while campers and day-trippers enjoy the other. Boaters and water skiers are out enjoying the beautiful weather, while you — simply relax and watch the world drift by.
And honestly, that’s the whole point. Away from the hustle and bustle of city traffic, we found ourselves enjoying the peace that only nature can provide.
**The highlight of this adventure wasn’t just the boat tour down the Grand River; it was the people. Friendly staff who went out of their way to make sure everyone had a pleasant afternoon.
For around the $100 mark, the experience included a delicious meal, live entertainment before the three river boats departed, and a relaxing cruise through one of Ontario’s beautiful river valleys. Personally, I thought it was money well spent. Watching the wildlife and taking in nature at its finest made for a wonderful afternoon.
From the original phone call to the moment we stepped off the boat, the professionalism and hospitality shown by Grand River Dinner Cruises made this a memorable experience.
This is one DayTrippen adventure I would happily recommend to anyone looking to escape the madness of the city for a few relaxing hours.
- Did I mention how refreshing it was to meet genuinely friendly people? With everything happening in the world today, it’s easy to forget there are still businesses that truly care about their customers. I guess I’ll have to get out more.

Before we left, we were invited to complete a customer questionnaire. It asked the usual questions: Did you enjoy your afternoon? How was the service? How could we improve was the best one. Without hesitation, my wife and I agreed: “You can’t change anything. The afternoon was perfect.”

The gift shop was reasonably priced compared to most tourist attractions.
They took special care of the grounds with seating and accommodations for their customers.
Live band to loosen the mood before the Grand River tour.

The captain was knowledgeable about the area and answered any questions.
Price was very reasonable.
Cons
Band was loud for our liking; however, the other passengers loved it. “We were the only ones that left the music to explore the quiet and peaceful grounds.”
